Dems annoyed stock market didn't go into a panic.

Shades of 2008. A TARP deal was rapidly set as markets tanked. Oh, the good-ole days to be a big spending lawmaker.
I just got off the phone with a source on Capitol Hill who has spent the past few days trying to convince Republicans to vote for a debt ceiling hike.

He told me that the biggest obstacle he faces has been "market complacency."

"Frankly, a bit of panic would be very helpful right now," he said.

As he explained it, lots of people in Washington, D.C. expected that this would be a week marked by panic in the markets. Stocks would tank. Bonds would get clobbered. The dollar would do something dramatic. And all of this would help convince reluctant lawmakers that they had to reach a compromise on the debt ceiling.

New intimidation tactics against gathering signatures for CA ballot propositions

It struck me as odd yesterday. I had just decided to get involved in gathering signatures to help overturn the disgusting new law that forces sexual preference information into CA elementary school curricula. I had Rush Limbaugh on in the car, and here comes this ad where people are saying NOT to sign petitions. And scaring listeners into thinking petition gatherers are identity thieves. Interesting timing....
As backers of several high-profile ballot measures hit the streets looking for signatures, a new radio ad has surfaced warning listeners that signing initiative petitions puts voters "at risk for identity theft."
The 60-second spot, which is airing on at least one Southern California radio station, features a man telling his spouse she should not have signed a petition at the grocery store.
"The Legislature called it an identity theft starter kit. Now we really need to watch our bank statements and credit information," he says.
"That's it, I'm not singing any more petitions," the woman responds. "I guess the lesson here is not to give our name and address to anyone we don't know."
The identity of the group behind the ad remains a mystery, but the timing of the launch suggests its aim is to derail one of several high-profile measures currently trying to qualify for the 2012 ballot.
The spot claims to be paid for by a group called "Californians Against Identity Theft. The coalition has no website and has not filed a campaign committee with the Secretary of State, though the content of the ad likely would not trigger disclosure requirements because it does not mention a specific measure or candidate.
Update 11:36 a.m.: A website for the group has been launched at this link
The group does not appear to have any ties to legitimate organizations dedicated to protecting consumers from identity theft. A spokeswoman for the San Diego-based Identity Theft Resource Center disputed the premise of the ad.
Under state law, it is illegal to use initiative signatures for anything other than the initiative petition. Election code also prohibits felons ineligible to register to vote from serving as signature gatherers, as claimed in the ad.
Derek Cressman of government watchdog group Common Cause said he was "hard pressed" think of a situation where signing an initiative petition led to identity theft. He said the ad sounded like an attempt to "provoke a fear" to discourage people from signing petitions.
"If they really wanted people to take their warning seriously, they'd have more credibility by revealing their own identities," he said.
More here.
Apparently the SEIU wants to be notified when people are gathering signatures against their card check legislation.  So they can call out the goons on you?  Nice.  Things are getting rough out here in CA.

ATTN: CA BLOGGERS! Anti Gay History in CA schools Petition drive has started!

October 12, 2011 is the deadline to turn in over 500,000 valid registered-voter signatures in order to get a measure on the ballot to reverse the horrible decision by the CA legislature and Governor Brown to teach our ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN about the SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND PREFERENCE of historical figures in the CA Social Science curriculum. The petitions should be available later this week, after the lawyers review the measure and give the OK.

Please go to http://stopsb48.com/ and click on Sign a Petition under the Take Action heading.  They will send petitions to you in a few days when they become available.

SB48 forces children to study materials that tell them their families’ values are wrong.
It forces schools to use a social science curriculum that promotes the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lifestyles that undermine traditional family relationships.
It does not allow parents to protect their kids by opting out of classes that promote homosexuality.
It forces schools to review and replace their curriculum at a time when this money should be used for other purposes.
As the LA Times wrote, it injects “controversial politics into the classroom” and puts politicians rather than academic experts in charge of curriculum at a time when classrooms need to focus on improving academic performance.
It requires a selective treatment of history by requiring that only events that reflect positively on people in the LGBT community may be discussed.
It creates conflict between schools and families over the values children learn.
It creates conflict between teachers and schools by forcing teachers with traditional values to teach as true what they do not believe.
It threatens charter schools that are renewing their communities, taking away their freedom to offer instruction focused on academics instead of politics.
Please join me in printing out petitions and standing in front of your local grocery store to get signatures. Our kids' and our society's future depends on YOU!

Please send a link to this story to your CA friends and relatives if you do not live in California.  We can all HELP!

Russell Brand wrote an excellent blog post about Amy Winehouse

Russell Brand is Katy Perry's husband, and a former addict. I never listened to Amy Winehouse sing, but I followed some of her stories in the news and I was aware she struggled with addiction. Of course the toxicology results won't be in for 2 to 4 weeks. However, it is true that taking heavy drugs will depress the breathing centers of the brain. When it gets to the point that the person forgets to breathe, they die. Like Anna Nicole Smith. Like John Belushi. Like Kurt Cobain. Like any garden-variety person who plays with fire and never wakes up.

Russell says he finally conquered his addiction at the age of 27, the same age Amy was when she passed away. He says he'd known Amy for a long time before he had ever heard her sing ... calling her voice "entirely human yet laced with the divine."

Here's his blog, in its entirety:

For Amy

When you love someone who suffers from the disease of addiction you await the phone call. There will be a phone call. The sincere hope is that the call will be from the addict themselves, telling you they've had enough, that they're ready to stop, ready to try something new. Of course though, you fear the other call, the sad nocturnal chime from a friend or relative telling you it's too late, she's gone.

Frustratingly it's not a call you can ever make it must be received. It is impossible to intervene.

I've known Amy Winehouse for years. When I first met her around Camden she was just some twit in a pink satin jacket shuffling round bars with mutual friends, most of whom were in cool Indie bands or peripheral Camden figures Withnail-ing their way through life on impotent charisma. Carl Barrat told me that "Winehouse" (which I usually called her and got a kick out of cos it's kind of funny to call a girl by her surname) was a jazz singer, which struck me as a bizarrely anomalous in that crowd. To me with my limited musical knowledge this information placed Amy beyond an invisible boundary of relevance; "Jazz singer? She must be some kind of eccentric" I thought. I chatted to her anyway though, she was after all, a girl, and she was sweet and peculiar but most of all vulnerable.

I was myself at that time barely out of rehab and was thirstily seeking less complicated women so I barely reflected on the now glaringly obvious fact that Winehouse and I shared an affliction, the disease of addiction. All addicts, regardless of the substance or their social status share a consistent and obvious symptom; they're not quite present when you talk to them. They communicate to you through a barely discernible but un-ignorable veil. Whether a homeless smack head troubling you for 50p for a cup of tea or a coked-up, pinstriped exec foaming off about his "speedboat" there is a toxic aura that prevents connection. They have about them the air of elsewhere, that they're looking through you to somewhere else they'd rather be. And of course they are. The priority of any addict is to anaesthetise the pain of living to ease the passage of the day with some purchased relief.

From time to time I'd bump into Amy she had good banter so we could chat a bit and have a laugh, she was "a character" but that world was riddled with half cut, doped up chancers, I was one of them, even in early recovery I was kept afloat only by clinging to the bodies of strangers so Winehouse, but for her gentle quirks didn't especially register.

Then she became massively famous and I was pleased to see her acknowledged but mostly baffled because I'd not experienced her work and this not being the 1950's I wondered how a "jazz singer" had achieved such cultural prominence. I wasn't curious enough to do anything so extreme as listen to her music or go to one of her gigs, I was becoming famous myself at the time and that was an all consuming experience. It was only by chance that I attended a Paul Weller gig at the Roundhouse that I ever saw her live.

I arrived late and as I made my way to the audience through the plastic smiles and plastic cups I heard the rolling, wondrous resonance of a female vocal. Entering the space I saw Amy on stage with Weller and his band; and then the awe. The awe that envelops when witnessing a genius. From her oddly dainty presence that voice, a voice that seemed not to come from her but from somewhere beyond even Billie and Ella, from the font of all greatness. A voice that was filled with such power and pain that it was at once entirely human yet laced with the divine. My ears, my mouth, my heart and mind all instantly opened. Winehouse. Winehouse? Winehouse! That twerp, all eyeliner and lager dithering up Chalk Farm Road under a back-combed barnet, the lips that I'd only seen clenching a fishwife fag and dribbling curses now a portal for this holy sound. So now I knew. She wasn't just some hapless wannabe, yet another pissed up nit who was never gonna make it, nor was she even a ten-a-penny-chanteuse enjoying her fifteen minutes. She was a f**king genius.

Shallow fool that I am I now regarded her in a different light, the light that blazed down from heaven when she sang. That lit her up now and a new phase in our friendship began. She came on a few of my TV and radio shows, I still saw her about but now attended to her with a little more interest. Publicly though, Amy increasingly became defined by her addiction. Our media though is more interested in tragedy than talent, so the ink began to defect from praising her gift to chronicling her downfall. The destructive personal relationships, the blood soaked ballet slippers, the aborted shows, that youtube madness with the baby mice. In the public perception this ephemeral tittle-tattle replaced her timeless talent. This and her manner in our occasional meetings brought home to me the severity of her condition. Addiction is a serious disease; it will end with jail, mental institutions or death. I was 27 years old when through the friendship and help of Chip Somers of the treatment centre, Focus12 I found recovery, through Focus I was introduced to support fellowships for alcoholics and drug addicts which are very easy to find and open to anybody with a desire to stop drinking and without which I would not be alive.

Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticised, at 27 years old. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Not all addicts have Amy's incredible talent. Or Kurt's or Jimi's or Janis's, some people just get the affliction. All we can do is adapt the way we view this condition, not as a crime or a romantic affectation but as a disease that will kill. We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care. We need to look at the way our government funds rehabilitation. It is cheaper to rehabilitate an addict than to send them to prison, so criminalisation doesn't even make economic sense. Not all of us know someone with the incredible talent that Amy had but we all know drunks and junkies and they all need help and the help is out there. All they have to do is pick up the phone and make the call. Or not. Either way, there will be a phone call.

Beware of reddened body parts, not spider bites so much

via fox 31 Denver
No, this is not a joke. There is a story today about how a 40-y-o man died of 19 black widow spider bites. They show a picture of the top of his foot with small bruises, but what alarms me more is the overall redness and swelling. That is a sign of a rapidly growing infection called cellulitis.

This happened to me once. I had a small cyst on my left upper arm that remained for years, not doing much. Two days after giving birth to child #4, I looked down at my left upper arm and it was red all over the bicep area, swollen and hot. Apparently what had happened was that bacteria from childbirth colonized the area and took over. If this had happened 100 years ago, I would probably have died. As it was, I got onto antibiotics and had the wound surgically cleaned. It was in such bad shape in there that it could not be closed and had to heal in the open position, leaving a roundish, deep, ugly scar. I suffered a lot because the wound was on the part of the arm where the baby's head lies while breastfeeding. I wore an ace bandage and changed the dressing regularly, but ouch!

I have also seen cellulitis on the lower leg of a neighbor. She and I were standing talking in front of her house, and she was standing on the raised portion of her planter bed. I could not help but notice that her shins were of two different colors. One was reddish-purple. I asked if there was something wrong with her leg. She told me she had just been diagnosed with a bad infection and was on antibiotics. I told her that sounded about right.

Bottom line is, this man probably did not die of spider bites. He likely died of a massive infection. Cellulitis turned into septicemia (blood infection) leading to death. Deepest condolences to his family.

Did Obamacare kill the Obama recovery?

By: Conn Carroll | Senior Editorial Writer Follow Him @Conncarroll | 07/21/11 9:44 AM

The Heritage Foundation’s James Sherk has a fascinating new paper out showing that the U.S. economic recovery stalled almost immediately after Obamacare became law. Before Obamacare was passed, private sector job creation had been averaging 67,600 net new jobs a month. After Obamacare passed net private sector job creation fell to 6,400 jobs a month. Sherk identifies some provisions of Obamacare that discourage job creation:
  • Businesses with more than 50 workers will see their costs for health coverage rise—they must purchase more expensive government-approved insurance or pay a penalty;
  • Businesses with fewer than 50 workers have a strong incentive to maintain this size, to avoid these higher costs; and
  • Employers face considerable uncertainty about what constitutes qualifying health coverage and what it will cost. They also do not know what the health care market or their health care costs will look like in four years. This makes planning for the future difficult.
Missing form this list is the $500 billion in new taxes Obamacare also inflicted on the nascent recovery.

Hey Obama: What are you doing w 181 billion per month if not paying bills?

There is enough money coming in to the federal government each month to pay for debt service, social security, medicare and all military and TSA obligations. So exactly what is Obama planning to do with all that money. More trips abroad? More evenings out on the town? More Kobe beef and expensive champagne? What!

I think Obama is holding grandma hostage so that he can keep spending over our credit limit. We should cut up his credit card.

Of Post Abortive Women, 94% regret abortion

Complications Of Abortion

AN ABORTION is usually a safe and legal procedure, but many problems can occur either during or after a legal abortion, problems that you might not have been told about. You deserve to know what can happen to you if you choose an abortion.

Approximately 10% of women undergoing elective abortion will suffer immediate complications. The most common complications that can occur at the time of an abortion are:
  • perforation of the uterus
  • excessive bleeding
  • infection
  • embolism
  • retained tissue
  • hemorrhage
  • cervical injury
  • endotoxic shock
  • "boggy" uterus
  • failure to recognize an ectopic pregnancy
Warren Hern, Abortion Practice (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1990).

A survey of post-abortive women found that:

28% attempted suicide

31% experienced suicidal feelings

60% commented that the decision to abort made their lives worse

94% regretted the decision to abort
"Survey of Reaction to Abortion," The Post Abortion Review, Fall 1994, pp. 6-8.

Over 50% of women experienced one or more of the following feelings after they had abortions: depression, guilt, regret, nervousness, insomnia.

Celeste McGovern, "Hag-Ridden by Post-Abortion Guilt," British Columbia Report, 10/18/93.

Problems with future pregnancies

After abortion, 24% of women experience complications with later pregnancies. These include excessive bleeding, premature delivery, cervical incompetence or rupture of the placenta.

Acta/Obstetrics and Gynecology Scandinavia, Vol. 58 (1979), pp. 491-494, American Journal of Obs/Gyn Vol. 141 (1981), pp.769-772 and Vol. 146 (1983), pp.136-140.

Women who abort are nearly four times more likely to start abusing alcohol or drugs.

New Study Confirms Link Between Abortion and Substance Abuse," The Post Abortion Review, Vol. 1 No. 3, Fall 1993.

Tubal Pregnancies

Tubal (ectopic) pregnancies increase by 30% after one abortion, and by 160% after 2 or more abortions.
American Journal of Obs.& Gyn, Vol. 160 (1988), pp. 642-6.

Miscarriages

Approximately 14% of women who have an abortion will miscarry a future pregnancy, and that risk increases to 200% with multiple abortions.

Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 243, (1980) pp 2495-2499.

Placenta Previa

The risk of placenta previa, which produces extremely severe, life-threatening bleeding during future pregnancies, is increased by600% after an abortion.

American Journal of Obs. & Gyn., Vol. 141 (1981), pp. 769-772.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (P.I.D.)

Approximately 5% of women who abort develop P.I.D. within 4 weeks after a first trimester abortion. For patients who have a Chlamydia infection at the time of abortion the risk of P.I.D. increases to 23%.

"Physical Health Risks of Abortion: Scientific Studies Reveal Significant Risk," The Elliot Institute, PO Box 9292 Colorado Springs, CO 80923.

Women with prior or current P.I.D. experience a decrease in fertility and an extended period of pain following an abortion.

Acta/Obstetrics and Gynecology Scandinavia, Vol. 58, 1979, pp. 539-542 and Vol. 61 (1982), pp. 557-560.

Breast Cancer

An analysis of 38 worldwide studies found a 30% overall increased risk of breast cancer after abortion.

"Induced Abortion as an Independent Risk Factor for Breast Cancer: A Comprehensive Review and Meta-Analysis" Joel Brind, et al.,Epidemiology & Community Health, Vol. 481 (1996)

The risk of breast cancer increases to 90% for abortions performed after 18 weeks, and to 150% if the woman is under 18.

It's official. Gay history will be taught to my public school kids.

I am in a state of shock and mourning over this. Is it possible to overturn it through the initiative process? My intuition tells me that over 50% of California parents will object to the gay agenda being taught in elementary school without an opt-out option. Just a hunch.

Replacing Beck with Beckel, et tu, Fox?

It is a mean joke, replacing Glenn Beck with Bob Beckel and other unnotables in the new show TheFive on Fox News. It is not that I watched Beck that often, but I know his heart was in the right place. And why am I left wondering why Fox and Beck parted ways so quickly after Beck became an outspoken proponent of Israel, and so soon after Fox was bought by the Saudis. Hmmm.

In the meantime, Beckel rubs salt in the wounds. Yesterday he called us, the Tea Party, anarchists. He said, "they like to call themselves patriots, but they are anarchists."

Hey, Bob. Look at the header on my blog. That may look like anarchy to you because your kind are always projecting your hatred and tendency to violence onto others. It was in reality a large, peaceful gathering of dedicated Americans who are genuinely worried about the direction our once-great nation is headed. These people had the temerity to bring trash bags to the National Mall and clean up after themselves. But you don't recognize that.

You want to know what we Tea Party Patriots really call ourselves? Constitutional Conservatives. I'm sorry if the idea of adhering to the American Constitution offends you. Wait. Scratch that. I'm not sorry at all. Anyone who is offended by our Constitution needs to take a long boat to somewhere and never come back. No need for you to distress yourselves by observing Americans living in liberty, right?

Michele Bachmann is a Constitutional Conservative. I bet you didn't read her piece in the Daily Caller yesterday. You probably won't read the following quote either. But you should.
I believe our founders knew what they were doing when they designed a limited government with specific, enumerated powers. I’m also convinced that many of our problems result from the federal government’s insatiable — and unconstitutional — grab for power and money. On issues ranging from light bulbs to bailouts, to the Dodd-Frank banking legislation, Washington has been on a destructive spree of bureaucratic empire-building. It’s time for that to stop.
It's not anarchy, hon. It's the opposite. It is the rule of law, not the rule of often flighty, selfish politicians.

Can we stop calling it the Federal Reserve Bank? This name is the perpetuation of a lie that has fooled generations of Americans. We should insist on truth in advertising. I like John Smith Reserve Bank. Unless you can come up with a better name?

Harry Potter, a bittersweet ending

I remember being irked when my now 22-y-o daughter brought home the book Harry Potter way back in the beginning. I had given her twenty dollars for the school book faire, and I hoped she would buy some low-priced paperbacks. She bought one expensive hard-backed book on the recommendation of the book lady. Of course we all fell in love with the book and camped out at bookstores at midnight as each new book was released.

I still read a chapter a night to my 8-y-o son, and look forward to re-reading the books with my younger kids. It is the gift that keeps on giving. Many thanks to the cast and crew for making such wonderful movies. I can't believe that they were able to keep up the quality through EIGHT movies. Usually sequels are terrible. They all deserve much kudos.

Plant a vegetable garden, go to jail?

A woman in Michigan faces 93 days of jail time for replanting her front yard with vegetable planting beds after it was torn up for a sewer replacement project. She is standing up for her property rights, demanding a jury trial, and the city of Oak Park is throwing the book at her.
I used to watch the show Victory Garden on PBS on weekend morning. The traditional Victory Garden was planted in WWI or WWII in back and front yards as a way to ease pressure on the food supply and to help the war effort. Is it me or is the boot of government falling too heavily on our necks nowadays.
One commenter recommended that she should plant bamboo if forced to replant her yard. That'll teach those complaining neighbors!
Another thing. With all the blight in Detroit nowadays, the city spends their time harassing THIS WOMAN?

Sickening. CA passes bill mandating gay history in schools. Veto, please?

Eeew.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California lawmakers on Tuesday sent the governor a bill that would make the state the first requiring public schools to include the contributions of gays and lesbians in social studies curriculum.
The bill, passed on a party-line vote, adds lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as well as people with disabilities to the list of groups that schools must include in the lessons. It also would prohibit material that reflects adversely on gays.
Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco says SB48 is crucial because of the bullying that happens to gay students. Republicans called it a well-intentioned but ill-conceived bill and raised concerns that it would indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality.

"This bill will require California schools to present a more accurate and nuanced view of American history in our social science curriculum by recognizing the accomplishments of groups that are not often recognized," said Assembly Speaker John Perez, the first openly gay speaker of the California Assembly.
The bill now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, who has not said whether he would sign it. Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill in 2006.
Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, a Republican from Twin Peaks, said he was offended as a Christian that the bill was being used to promote a "homosexual agenda" in public schools.
"I think it's one thing to say that we should be tolerant," Donnelly said. "It is something else altogether to say that my children are going to be taught that this lifestyle is good."
I hate when the gay agenda comes up in my kids' faces. Talking about gays with kids brings up the topic of "what is gay, mommy?" This can force a discussion of Anal Sex with a child who is likely to be too young to learn about sex at all. Will gay history be taught to 5-year-olds in Kindergarten? What is to stop them if this bill is not vetoed by Governor Brown?  Maybe Southern California really DOES need to split off from the Northern part of the state.  Californians already spoke against the Gay Agenda.  52.5% of us are against Same Sex Marriage.  59% of young CA voters age 18 to 34, are also against Same Sex Marriage.  I imagine at least as many are against a homosexual agenda being shoved down our kid's throats in school.  This is beyond ridiculous.  Our children are not guinea pigs for social experimentation.  That is not what they are enrolled in school for.

Linda Evangelista and Salma Hayek - Rule 5

The world sits stunned that one French billionaire allegedly impregnated two world-famous beauties at the same time. Supermodel Linda Evangelista apparently filed for child support from French Billionaire CEO Francois Henri-Pinault for her 4-year-old son. Francois, meanwhile, is married to Salma Hayek and the two of them have been raising their 4-year-old daughter. In the meantime, enjoy a nice rule 5 post that was inspired by Robert Stacy McCain in more ways than one.
